Who We Are

As the Deputy Director of the Ingham County Department of Social Services, Margaret Grost regularly witnessed the unmet needs of children in foster care. A couple stories in particular stood out, a young girl who wished only for a Christmas dress, and a boy unable to join his school band because he had no instrument. Deeply moved by these experiences, Margaret began reaching out to friends for help in purchasing the small but meaningful items that made such a difference in the lives of children in foster care. Encouraged by Ingham County Commissioner Jean Tubbs, who suggested applying for a grant through a local foundation, Margaret took the first step in raising funds to support children in foster care. That love and caring was turned into action and Caring About Kids, Inc. (CAK), an all-volunteer 501 (3) (c) organization was incorporated in 1994 to help meet the needs of foster children. Since its formation, this volunteer group has raised over $800,000 from donations by individuals, an annual golf outing, and other fundraising events.
Since 1994, CAK has had the privilege of providing children in care through Ingham County with extracurricular experiences, birthday gifts, gift certificates, trips, camps, tutoring, books, and many other special expenditures and other outings. Also, through the “Share the Music” program musical instruments have been provided to children in care who want to expand their musical knowledge by participating in band.
